Modern learning spaces with a bespoke colour scheme

What sort of architecture do schools need to ensure that learning can take place in a contemporary environment? The new building for the upper school at the Prälat-Diehl School in Groß-Gerau provides an answer. As a modern learning space, the building combines a variety of spaces for teaching, interaction and independent study.

In the media centre, colourfully designed alcoves invite pupils to read and linger. Pupils can retreat here whilst still maintaining visual contact with the entrance hall. Such varied spatial arrangements characterise the concept of the modern learning environment and provide a deliberate contrast to traditional school buildings.

The new building for the upper school at the Prälat-Diehl School in Groß-Gerau offers a variety of areas for everyday school life. The building was designed as a passive house and features various technical measures for building cooling. These include night-time cooling via ventilation flaps integrated into the façade. Large, solid concrete surfaces are able to absorb the room temperature and release it again with a time delay.

Modern and vibrant colours with ARTIGO

These rough-textured concrete surfaces are contrasted by large windows, recurring circular forms and striking colours. The choice fell on more than 6,000 square metres of ARTIGO rubber flooring, which is distributed exclusively in Germany by objectflor.

The colour palette gave the designers the opportunity to create specific accents: “It’s a free choice of four colours, not selected according to function or colour-coding systems,” explains architect Gerhard Dallendörfer from the responsible design practice, Loewer + Partner Architekten, describing the concept. “For example, we didn’t want the physics teachers to always be confined to yellow rooms.”

Consequently, the colours vary deliberately throughout the building, lending the individual rooms distinct design accents. Two floor coverings were produced in special colours specifically for this design concept.

As a continuation of the concept, the colour scheme was also incorporated in other parts of the building. The chosen shades recur throughout the entire structure, creating a design coherence. In this way, the school building is given a distinctive colour and design concept.
