Ramelow Fashion and Brand Store in Stendal: Bauhaus architecture meets modern floor design

The refurbished Ramelow fashion and brand store in Stendal was awarded the ‘Stores of the Year’ prize in the fashion category by the German Retail Association (Handelsverband Deutschland e. V.) in 2021. The Bauhaus architecture of the listed building is combined with a modern flooring design featuring concrete and wood-effect finishes from objectflor.

Innovative shop concepts are recognised annually by the German Retail Association (Handelsverband Deutschland e. V.) with the ‘Stores of the Year’ awards. Among the 2021 winners is the long-established Ramelow in Stendal in the fashion category.

In 1872, Gustav Ramelow founded his first shop in Klütz, Mecklenburg. Around 50 years later, the Bauhaus-style fashion house in Stendal opened its doors. In 1991, the family bought back the shop, which had been nationalised during the GDR era. The successful refurbishment of the listed building has brought things full circle. Today, the fashion house combines tradition with modern approaches to customer service – both in-store and online.

Among its special features are the large, bookable ‘Family & Friends’ changing rooms and lounge areas with communal tables, which can also be used for remote working. Another distinctive feature is the open tailor’s workshop, which has been integrated directly into the retail space.

Floor design around the atriums

“Here, the focus is on the space for people,” explains architect Stefan Kunze from the Elmshorn-based firm Kunze Ladenbau, describing the interior design concept. “The atmosphere should be relaxed and airy, with floor coverings that emphasise the building’s structure.”

Across the approximately 3,200 historical square metres, a heavily grained oak finish with bold colour contrasts from the EXPONA COMMERCIAL collection was laid and combined with large-format concrete-effect finishes.

“We chose objectflor because of the particularly beautiful surfaces of the concrete-effect tiles,” says Stefan Kunze. “The highs and lows make them look very authentic.”

The varied floor design guides the flow of traffic and structures the retail spaces around the striking atriums in the centre. Details also contribute to the design: grout lines make the tiles appear larger and enhance the impression of a classic concrete floor.
