" The “KAYAR” rubber flooring, developed by the Milan-based design studio Sottsass Associati, is a firm favourite with architects looking to showcase modern architecture in buildings with high footfall. "

Rubber flooring for a modern laboratory environment

The new ‘Centre for Plant Molecular Biology’ in Tübingen offers an open-plan laboratory layout covering around 5,700 square metres, featuring numerous communal areas. The KAYAR collection by ARTIGO was selected as the flooring and was specifically tested to meet the particular requirements of the research building prior to installation.

Just as innovative as the research approach of the ‘Centre for Plant Molecular Biology’ is the new building of this internationally recognised institution. Strips and horizontal bands of exposed concrete structure the façade and, with their appearance, echo the theme of cellular structures. Sixteen interdisciplinary research groups work in the building.

The design was commissioned by the State of Baden-Württemberg, represented by the State Agency for Assets and Construction, Tübingen Office. Detailed design and project management were carried out by the Stuttgart-based architectural practice Wenzel + Wenzel in collaboration with RDS Partner Hattingen. In this modern building, scientists work in an open-plan laboratory environment that encourages collaboration between the research groups. The flexible usage concept and the handling of chemical substances placed particular demands on the choice of flooring.

ARTIGO KAYAR: Design and tested product properties

The ARTIGO KAYAR rubber flooring, developed by the Milan-based design studio Sottsass Associati, combines a striking surface texture with a distinctive colour palette. Incorporated coconut fibres define the flooring’s appearance and give it a unique look. In Germany, ARTIGO rubber floor coverings are distributed exclusively by objectflor.

For the research centre, the architects chose the flooring in black-green. In addition to its design qualities, the technical requirements of laboratory operations were a key factor. The rubber’s permanent elasticity supports the flooring’s dimensional stability and load-bearing capacity. Another key consideration was resistance to chemicals. ARTIGO KAYAR was specifically tested for the project under the intended conditions of use. The factory-applied surface finish facilitates cleaning and maintenance and may eliminate the need for additional floor treatment, provided this complies with the relevant maintenance guidelines.
