Living, working and life – A winning floor covering for innovative living concepts

On 31 July 2023, the first ‘POHA House’ opened on Theaterplatz in Aachen. It is a housing project that brings together living, working and spending time together. The POHA House is Netzwerk Boden’s 2024 housing project.
The housing of the future must offer more than ‘just a place to live’. Flexible working arrangements, a shortage of housing in cities, the rising number of households, economic changes and digitalisation are all influencing the planning and design of future housing.
How can a location be made attractive and liveable for skilled workers and talented individuals? The POHA House concept offers not only a high quality of living but also an appealing workplace. As part of the redevelopment of the corner building at Theaterplatz 1, 1,800 m² of living space was created across six floors, comprising furnished units of various sizes and a co-working area on the first floor. The centrepiece is the communal area on the top floor – complete with panoramic views of the cathedral and town hall. The office spaces are open to the public and can be easily booked. The residential concept was planned and implemented by Schmitz + Hansen Architekten Part GmbH from Aachen.
One flooring solution for all apartments, offices and communal areas
Across all areas, 1,500 square metres of the timeless wood-effect vinyl design flooring EXPONA COMMERCIAL Classic Oak was laid.
The flooring was professionally installed by our partner, F.D. Beissel Fussbodentechnik from Aachen. The choice fell on flooring from the EXPONA COMMERCIAL collection, as its quality, durability and versatility made it the ideal solution for the construction project. The requirement to combine modern office spaces with a sense of comfort in the living areas was met by this flooring and the installation of an impact sound insulation underlay.
EXPONA COMMERCIAL floor coverings are easy to clean and resistant to moisture and dirt. With a wear layer of 0.55 mm, EXPONA COMMERCIAL is the ideal collection for heavy-duty use and high footfall. The multi-certified floor coverings also bear the Indoor Air Comfort Gold seal and contain only phthalate-free and organic plasticisers.
A collaborative solution
Many stakeholders – from the architect to the contractors and the manufacturers of the individual building components – were involved in the “POHA House” project. The “Flooring Project 2024” award is a tribute to all participants and demonstrates that, by working together, the best solutions can be found and projects can become winners.
