Artigo Rubber in the Children’s Kingdom at the Deutsches Museum in Munich

‘Kinderreich’ at the Deutsches Museum is an exhibition for children aged 3 to 8, which was completed in 2022 as part of the comprehensive refurbishment of the first phase of the building.
The new concept was developed and implemented by studio lot in collaboration with the Amsterdam-based firm featuring; through architecturally experimental spatial densification, combined with an exciting colour, material and lighting scheme, the space becomes not only a spatial experience but also a guide that helps visitors find their way through the exhibition.  

The museum offers spaces for hands-on experiences – particularly in the Children’s Kingdom.
Everyone knows that, for children, the floor is much more than just something to walk on. For children, the floor is part of the play environment. They don’t just walk on it; they roll and romp about on it. It is therefore essential to take children’s unique perspective into account in order to combine maximum safety with the creation of a pleasant, playful environment that evokes positive feelings. Rubber is inherently slip-resistant, ensuring the best possible safety for children at play. As an elastic floor, it offers a comfortable walking experience and is naturally soft. It is free from PVC, heavy metals, halogens and volatile plasticisers.

Dynamic design
A total of 1,000 square metres of ARTIGO KAYAR in the special colours pink and yellow was laid. The pink KAYAR flooring is also characterised by the incorporation of coconut fibres, creating a unique visual effect.
The newly designed children’s area impresses not only the young visitors with its distinctive design and colour accents – it also offers a striking contrast to the other exhibition areas, thereby sparking interest amongst adults too. 

Vibrant, energetic colours transform a dark basement into a bright, stimulating space that conveys a sense of fun, arouses curiosity and encourages playful exploration. As soon as you enter the children’s area, the two primary colours in the room provide a sense of direction: the yellow accents on the pink floor guide the way through the children’s area and create an immersive experience.

Particularly quiet & easy
