Artigo Rubber in the Children’s Area of the Deutsches Museum in Munich
" The specific tactile quality and neutrality of the surface, combined with two strong colours, creates a unique spatial effect. The rubber material also perfectly enhances the vibrancy of the two colours. " – Anke Lorber, Dipl. Ing. Interior Designer
The Kinderreich at the Deutsches Museum is an exhibition for children aged 3 to 8, which was completed in 2022 as part of the general refurbishment of the first construction phase. The new concept was developed and implemented by studio lot in collaboration with the Amsterdam-based firm featuring, whereby the space is transformed into a spatial experience – and a guide helping visitors find their way through the exhibition – through architecturally experimental spatial densification, overlaid with an exciting colour, material and lighting scheme.
The museum offers spaces for hands-on experiences – particularly in the Children’s Kingdom.
Everyone knows that for children, the floor is much more than just something to walk on. For children, the floor is part of the play environment. They don’t just walk on it, but roll and romp about. Therefore, children’s unique perspective must be taken into account to combine maximum safety with the creation of a pleasant, playful environment that conveys positive feelings. Rubber is inherently slip-resistant, ensuring the best possible safety for children at play. As an elastic floor, it offers a comfortable walking experience and is naturally soft. Free from PVC, heavy metals, halogens and volatile plasticisers.
“Choosing the right material for the floor was of central importance in this project, as the material was used not only as a floor covering but also in the furniture, thus playing a role in the spatial design. The specific tactile quality and neutrality of the surface, paired with two strong colours, creates a unique spatial effect. The rubber material also perfectly enhances the vibrancy of the two colours.” - Anke Lorber, Dipl. Ing. Interior Designer
Dynamic Design
A total of 1,000 sqm of ARTIGO KAYAR in the special colours pink and yellow was installed. The pink KAYAR flooring is also distinguished by the incorporation of coconut fibres, creating a unique visual effect. The newly designed children’s area impresses not only the young visitors with its distinctive design and colour accents – it offers a striking contrast to the other exhibition areas and thus also captures the interest of adults. Through the use of strong, vibrant colours, a dark basement is transformed into a bright, stimulating space that conveys fun, arouses curiosity and makes one want to explore it playfully. As soon as you enter the children’s area, the two primary colours in the room provide a sense of direction: the yellow accents on the pink floor guide the way through the children’s area and create an immersive experience.
Particularly quiet & easy to maintain
As children are constantly in direct contact with the floor, ensuring the best possible hygiene is essential. Our ARTIGO KAYAR flooring has antibacterial properties, is easy to clean and resistant to dirt and moisture. ARTIGO floors guarantee exceptional impact sound reduction and are therefore an ideal solution for play areas. Furthermore, our flooring is characterised by its durability and resilience. With around one million museum visitors a year, these properties are indispensable.
Sustainable flooring
Our rubber floors are not only manufactured sustainably but are also 100% recyclable. ARTIGO rubber flooring is therefore perfectly suited to public spaces designed to promote collective well-being and a respectful attitude towards nature. With these eco-friendly floor coverings, the museum is sending a clear signal in favour of sustainable architecture.
