An interview with Managing Director Stephan Wolff

What advice can you give consumers to help them choose the right flooring?

Choosing the right floor covering is a personal decision. Many factors influence this choice, including trends, sustainability and the functionality of the flooring.

I recommend answering a few questions first:

What does the floor have to withstand in everyday life?

When children are playing, you shouldn’t have to worry about whether the flooring can cope. For people who enjoy cooking, it’s essential to have a truly hard-wearing floor in the kitchen – to give just two examples.

How much time do I want to spend looking after the floor?

If you’re looking for a low-maintenance floor that stays looking good for years with minimal upkeep, it’s best to avoid delicate woods, natural stone or carpets.

Which design complements my interior style?

Appearance naturally plays an important role when choosing a floor covering. The floor must complement your individual interior design style. A well-chosen floor sets the scene for your furniture and furnishings, ensuring that everything looks harmonious and striking.

Is the flooring healthy for living?

Your floor coverings should be healthy for living and should not pollute the indoor air with emissions. You should therefore look out for product certifications such as Indoor Air Comfort Gold.

How can consumers be sure that designer floor coverings are healthy for the home and sustainable? Is there an environmental label?

Unfortunately, it’s not exactly straightforward for consumers, as there isn’t just one label, but several. Here at objectflor, we have opted for the ‘Indoor Air Comfort Gold’ label and have all our flooring certified accordingly. This ensures that consumers are guaranteed to be on the safe side. The ‘Indoor Air Comfort Gold’ label is only awarded to products that fall below all globally established VOC emission limits.
Nowhere else are the guidelines stricter. Companies only receive these certificates for their products if they undergo regular audits and tests.

Appearance plays a particularly important role for many consumers. How does this apply to designer floor coverings?

One of the key advantages of designer flooring is its versatility. There is a suitable floor for every interior style:
from concrete-effect finishes for a loft-style ambience to light woods for the popular Scandinavian look. I would strongly advise choosing design flooring that looks high-quality thanks to its colour depth, unique textures and a beautiful matt finish. Here at objectflor, we attach the utmost importance to a perfect appearance. That’s what we’re known for.

Can you tell us a bit about the functionality of design flooring?

Vinyl flooring is simply unbeatable because it meets a wide range of requirements for modern floors: it’s robust and easy to maintain. The dense, largely non-porous surface usually only needs a quick hoover and an occasional wipe. The designs stay as beautiful as on the first day for many years with minimal effort: even if something is dropped or a bottle of red wine is knocked over.
Another advantage is that individual tiles or planks can be replaced in the event of damage such as burn marks. Design flooring is also a really good choice for the household budget. Its long lifespan ensures excellent value for money. Personally, I love the fact that you can lay design flooring in all living areas, including the bathroom and kitchen. A uniform floor creates a spacious and elegant look. What’s more, design flooring is very comfortable to walk on, as it feels warm underfoot and never cold like tiles. Incidentally, your neighbours will also be pleased with design flooring:
vinyl floors are pleasantly quiet underfoot and dampen noise.

Underfloor heating is very popular. Are design floor coverings suitable for this?

Yes, thanks to their excellent thermal conductivity, they are ideally suited for installation over hot-water underfloor heating systems. The heat spreads very quickly after the heating is switched on, meaning there is hardly any heat loss.

What trends are you currently seeing? Which floorings are in demand?

The clean, natural lines of Scandinavian design are particularly in demand at the moment. The trend is towards calm woods in warm shades, which create an elegant and understated atmosphere. A very matt and natural look is just as sought-after as large-format planks. Chevron designs and herringbone patterns have also enjoyed a revival – a nod to traditional craftsmanship. Among the enduring trends are concrete-effect finishes with their minimalist beauty.

Thank you very much for the interview, Mr Wolff!
