" The “KAYAR” rubber flooring developed by the design agency Sottsass Associati in Milan is a particular favourite with architects to set modern architecture in context in buildings with very high user frequency. "

The new “Centre for Plant Molecular Biology” in Tübingen provides some 5,700 square metres of open-plan laboratory space, with a large number of communications areas as well. As the floor covering, “KAYAR” from Artigo was the choice, specially tested in advance in view of the high demands to be imposed.

The new building housing the “Centre for Plant Molecular Biology” is as innovative as its purpose in the world of research, fitting for its reputation extending well beyond the borders of Germany. The rods and horizontal strips of exposed concrete give the façade structure, while imitating the cell structures seen under a microscope, and so represent a link with the purpose of the Centre, which accommodates 16 interdisciplinary research groups. The design derives from the regional authorities of the Land of Baden-Württemberg, represented by the Regional Agency for Assets and Construction, Tübingen Office.

Planning of the work and project management was entrusted to the Stuttgart architectural agency of Wenzel + Wenzel with RDS Partner Hattingen. In this modern structure, the scientists work in an open-plan laboratory setting, which encourages and promotes interaction among them. The flexible utilization concept, together with the burden incurred by chemical substances, impose particularly high demands on the floor covering.

Rubber flooring from objectflor for long service life

The “KAYAR” rubber flooring developed by the design agency Sottsass Associati in Milan is a particular favourite with architects to set modern architecture in context in buildings with very high user frequency. A highly contemporary range of colours, matched with the special surface structure created by integrated coconut fibres are the prime design features that make “KAYAR” so distinctive, which, like all rubber floors from the Artigo Mondo Group are marketed in Germany exclusively by objectflor.

For the Research Centre, the architects chose the floor covering in black-green. As well as the plus points in the design itself, the permanent elasticity of the rubber makes “KAYAR” highly shock-resistant and stable in shape and form. The resistance to chemicals was intensively tested with regard to the special demands imposed, and the surface finish applied in the factory has proved to be the perfect protection, as well as guaranteeing easy and economical cleaning without the need for preparatory care. And when it comes to sustainability, “KAYAR” is once again the right choice: The rubber flooring holds the “Blue Angel” certification, and is particularly low in emissions.
